Employment rights – salary and working hours

Workers are protected from working long or unsociable hours by law. Here you can find out the minimum wage for different age groups and the hours young people can work:

National Minimum Wage from 1 October 2009

  • Workers aged 16 - 17                   £3.57 per hour
  • Workers aged 18 - 21                   £4.83 per hour
  • Workers aged 22 years and over   £5.80 per hour

Work Time Regulations

Young people that have left school but are under 18 are limited to working:

  • 40 hours per week
  • 8 hours in one day
  • night working prohibited from 10pm - 6am or 11pm - 7am
