Brunei (1985 to date) Primary and Secondary Education
(Government of Brunei)
The main focus of CfBT's work in Brunei is on raising standards
of English in support of the national bi-lingual education policy.
C¦BT’s inputs include the recruitment and management of specialist
teachers to work in government schools and the development of
syllabuses, examinations, textbooks, CD ROMs and websites at
primary and secondary level. There are currently close to 200
teachers, as well as advisers in the Curriculum Development
Department. In addition to the work in government schools, CfBT’s
Training Centre offers personal enrichment, team-building,
leadership, language and computer classes. CfBT’s Examination
Centre administers IELTS and professional examinations. C¦BT also
runs teacher development courses including the Cambridge In-Service
Certificate in English Language Teaching and ESL in the
Mainstream.

Malaysia (1979 to date) English Language Teaching and
Innovation (Government of Malaysia)
CfBT Education Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has been actively
involved in education in Malaysia for more than 25 years,
particularly in the field of English language teaching and
innovation.
CfBT currently has four ongoing projects in Malaysia supporting
the country’s large-scale national change to prioritise English
language and return to English as the medium of instruction for
maths and science in all schools.
The largest of these projects is the provision of English
language co-coordinators (ELCs) who have trained more than
21,000 primary and secondary, mainly rural-based, English teachers
throughout east and west Malaysia since 2003. The ELCs encourage
and develop English language training through teacher training,
materials development, and extra-curricular activities in
districts. They also deliver in-service training to specialist and
non-specialist teachers to upgrade their qualifications and
expertise.
Other projects ongoing in Malaysia are: Project English
Teachers, 20 teachers who teach in key government residential
secondary schools to academically able students who do not have the
necessary skills in speaking and writing English which may limit
their career possibilities; the unique PIERS project (Project to
Improve English in Rural Schools), a privately-funded teacher
training programme for 13 schools in Seri Menanti, Kuala Pilah,
Negeri Sembilan and Darul Khusus which is helping to raise
standards in teaching English language, maths, science in English
and the use if ICT in education and school leadership; the
Matriculation Colleges Project, providing four lecturers of maths,
chemistry, physics and biology, based in Penang and Malacca, who
work with local colleagues to help improve their fluency and
confidence in delivering pre-university programmes to students in
English.
