New Secondary Curriculum

A new secondary curriculum is being introduced that will enable schools to raise standards and help all their learners meet the challenges of life in our fast-changing world.
After extensive consultation and development the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) have designed a curriculum that:

  • Reduces prescription over subject content
  • Creates flexibility to allow teachers to give attention to pupils who are struggling to master the basic skills of English and maths
  • Frees up time and space to allow pupils to study some areas in more depth
  • Highlights the connections between the subjects
  • Gives a new emphasis to the development of personal and life skills

The resulting new curriculum will be rolled out in secondary schools over three years, beginning with Year 7 pupils in September 2008.

CfBT will be working with ten subject associations to offer subject specific support for the implementation of the new secondary curriculum to all maintained schools in England covering PSHE, citizenship, history, geography, design and technology, languages, art and design, PE, RE and music.
