Young, Gifted & Talented Programme
Information for Parents

Parents/carers often have many questions about their child’s education. This section aims to provide information about gifted and talented education and also provides an essential link to the National Association for Gifted and Talented Children (NAGC) website where additional information can be found.

Parents/carers play a contributory and key role in the identification and development of a gifted and talented learner; working with their child, the school and the Local Authority will ensure that the very best support and access to resources is available.

How do I know if my child is gifted and/or talented?

Read through the Eligibility Criteria (under Quick Links) on the YG&T website for information to help you. While this information is primarily aimed at school and college staff, it includes guidance on identification recently published by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). You may find pages 4 and 6 particularly helpful. You should also discuss with the school’s leading teacher for gifted and talented.

I think my child is gifted or talented. How do I ensure that they can get access to the YG&T programme?

The Young, Gifted & Talented (YG&T) Programme is provided for gifted and talented learners in maintained primary and secondary schools or colleges in England. Your child can freely access the new YG&T Programme through the website at: www.ygt.dcsf.gov.uk, where useful advice and information about gifted and talented education is available. Membership of the YG&T Programme can be easily registered online.

Do also contact the G&T co-ordinator or G&T leading teacher in your child’s school or college for more information. If this is not possible, please get in touch with the G&T lead in your Local Authority, who will help facilitate contact with the school or college involved.

Will we have to pay for our child to be a member of the Learner Academy?

You will not have to pay for your child to register as a member of the YG&T Programme. For learners from maintained primary and secondary schools or colleges, a charge to cover costs made by providers may be applicable for some of the resources, products and events that are available.
Variable costs will apply to learners who are home-schooled, attend schools that are part of the independent sector, or attend schools that are overseas.

Will the Learner Academy provide any support for parents and carers of gifted and talented learners?

Yes. Through the YG&T website you have access to an increasingly wide range of information and advice about G&T teaching and learning.

From the parents’ and carers’ homepage, you can view the latest frequently asked questions, and once you have registered on the site, use a discussion forum where you can ‘speak’ with others and share their experiences of gifted and talented education.
