Young, Gifted & Talented Programme
About YG&T

Education is inclusive and plays an essential role in building and shaping the future of young people.

As we move into the future it is clear there is a growing need to provide personalised education, which meets the individual needs of learners.

CfBT Education Trust believes that, through YG&T, and building on existing good practice across the country, we can begin to achieve more personalised learning through extension programmes within and beyond the everyday classroom.

All schools contain G&T learners and are responsible for deciding the size of their G&T populations, taking account of national and local guidance and context. The national programme is designed to support them in enhancing provision for learners through challenging and innovative programming.

How is YG&T funded and where does this funding go?

YG&T is funded centrally through the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Primary and secondary schools are together receiving some £1bn, this financial year and next, to support personalised education for all pupils. This includes funding for G&T learners.

The proportion of funding that schools have available for gifted and talented education is decided at a local level. This funding allows learners greater access to resources, provisions and extension programmes dedicated to their skill area, while also providing them with access to specially trained teaching staff.

What is “gifted and talented”?

The Department for Children, Schools and Families defines gifted and talented learners as “children and young people with one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop those abilities)”.

More specifically the terms gifted and talented are defined as follows:

'Gifted' learners are those who have abilities in one or more academic subjects, such as maths and English.

'Talented' learners are those who have particular abilities in sport, music, design or creative and performing arts.

Other skills such as leadership, decision-making and critical/creative thinking are also taken into account when identifying gifted and talented learners.

Who identifies gifted and talented learners?

Although the vast majority of G&T learners are identifed within their school environment, parents may also play a role in the identification process. Parents are encouraged to seek the expertise of their child’s school, should they believe their child is gifted or talented. Information about identifying G&T learners can also be sought from Local Authorities, most of whom have gifted and talented dedicated staff.
