Films of Effective Practice

A new resource for Skills for Life trainers and practitioners

Films of Effective PracticeFilms of Effective PracticeFilms of Effective Practice

QIA Skills for Life Improvement Programme has created a new set of three films that demonstrate ways in which Skills for Life is taught in three different contexts. The films focus is on how literacy, language and numeracy (LLN) skills can be developed alongside vocational or other subject areas and therefore in a context of direct interest and relevance to the learners.

Two of the films, ‘Construction with embedded ESOL’ and ‘Literacy for sport’ show examples of embedded Skills for Life; that is, they bring together the language and literacy skills development and vocational aspects of the courses. The third film, ‘Numeracy for kitchen design’, represents a contextualised rather than embedded approach in that the key aims are to improve learners’ numeracy skills. Neverthless, these are taught in a context that is likely to appeal to the target group of adult learners and the approach shares many of the benefits of an embedded approach.

Who is it for?

The three films will be particular interest to teacher trainers as they provide a rich resource for promoting discussion and reflection on effective teaching. They will also be of interest to staff teams or individuals, whether they are LLN specialists or vocational teachers who have a similar interest in developing their own skills and knowledge.

For example, the films can be used:Films of Effective Practice DVD

  • for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Skills for Life or vocational teachers
  • in Initial Teacher Education for teaching in the post 16 sector
  • in quality improvement, to moderate observation and discuss grading, and as part of developing a Whole Organisation Approach to demonstrate cooperation between vocational and skills for life teams.
