Always, sometimes, never
Children are given a mathematical statement and have to
decide if it is always true, sometimes true or never
true. Examples chosen are designed to make
children think,explain and justify-not just guess an answer.
If it is always true can you prove it?
If it is sometimes true can you work out in which
cases it is true?
If it is never true can you convince somebody
using logic?
These problems can provide good opportunities for paired
discussion.
