Ken Round is a former primary head teacher who worked for the
majority of his teaching career in the mining communities of South
Yorkshire. He took the difficult decision to leave teaching in the
summer of 2001 when his school was closed due to local authority
reorganisation.
Ken has a long history of working with young people in the
outdoors and still maintains his involvement in residential
activities with primary pupils, both in this country and in France.
His particular outdoor ‘enthusiasms’ are walking and mountain
biking when time allows and he has now lapsed coaching
qualifications in Association Football, Cricket and Swimming.
Immediately prior to joining LCC, Ken was an additional tutor at
Bishop Grossesteste College, mainly supervising students on school
placement, and also an NPQH tutor.
He is a member of the Outdoor Education Advisers Panel and AfPE
(formerly BAALPE)
The role of the Outdoor Education Adviser is primarily to
implement the County Council’s statutory responsibility for the
Health Safety and Welfare of students and staff engaged on
Educational Visits. This is done through seeking to ensure all
visits are organised in line with ‘Safety in Outdoor Education’
which came into force on 1st January 2004.
In order to fulfil the monitoring role related to this
responsibility, community and controlled schools should submit
specified details of certain proposed visits to the adviser, for
either notification or approval, depending on the nature of the
visit. Additionally the adviser will undertake sample monitoring of
off site visits and visit schools to view the ‘Visit Log’ as
schools are recommended to maintain in the above guidance.
The adviser also seeks to promote the safe use of off site
visits for all Lincolnshire schools in order to develop those
skills, attitudes and attributes that are traditionally associated
with ‘Outdoor Education’ and contribute significantly to a young
person’s education and preparation for life beyond formal
schooling. To help with this aim, the adviser leads courses in
Educational Visits Co-ordinator Training (EVCs) Group Leader
Training and will within reason, tailor a workshop or staff meeting
to suit the needs of a school.
Advice and support can be accessed by contacting the adviser
directly, either by telephone or email.
