Onside@BostonUnited
Onside@BostonUnited is part of the national initiative 'Playing
for Success'. The Centre is based in the Vice President’s Lounge at
the Boston United football ground. The location gives the centre a
high profile within the club, as the area is used for hospitality
on match days.
Pupils from schools in Boston Borough have now been attending
the centre since January 2002. Study Support sessions operate on
four evenings a week, 10 weeks each term. Primary pupils attend
3.30-5.30pm and secondary pupils attend 5.30-7.30pm, one night a
week.
The centre is one of the football-based centres nationally to be
part of a National Literacy Trust initiative called ‘Reading the
Game’.
The centre also offers a daytime programme which schools are
able to buy into, further details are available from the
centre.
PURPOSE
The purpose of Onside@BostonUnited is to 'enhance young people’s
abilities as learners'. Using the facilities at Boston United F.C.
students are given the opportunity to attain, develop and refine
literacy, numeracy and ICT skills, enabling them to access and
obtain greater knowledge and understanding across the whole school
curriculum.
AIMS
The centre aims to:
- Develop independent, motivated and confident students who are
able to access all potential learning opportunities.
- Create a safe, exciting learning environment, encouraging high
expectations from students, mentors and staff.
- Raise standards and achievement in literacy and numeracy.
- Develop a clear and structured programme of study, which
enables the centre to meet the needs of individual students.
- Establish close working partnerships with schools in Boston
Borough to ensure student’s needs are met and that new learning
