Should you wish to appoint an AST in your school the procedure
below should prove useful. Guidance for the pay assimilation is
attached below.
Read the
procedure
If you have a colleague that wishes to become an AST and you
wish to support that application, we are suggesting the following
procedure:
a) examine relevant information. The 3 best websites are:
www.teachernet.gov.uk/professionaldevelopment/ast which contains
information and application forms
www.ofsted.gov.uk which contains details of Ofsted’s two reports
– go to “publications” and enter “advanced skills teachers”
www.cfbt.com/research/projects/TeacherSkillsReport.pdf - a
detailed report from CfBT on the work of advanced skills
teachers
b) discuss the issue with the relevant phase colleague. For
primary this should be either Nicola Beverley email:
nbeverley@cfbt.com (telephone: 07919 167 581) or Kay Howell email:
khowell440@hotmail.com (telephone: 07919 568 840)
c) complete the brief "expression of interest"
form which should be returned to Hazel Chesworth, Special Projects
Manager, Workforce Development (CPD), Lincolnshire School
Improvement Service, CfBT, The Old icarage, Newland, Lincoln LN1
1YQ who will acknowledge receipt of the form;
d) the brief details will be looked at by the AST team
comprising Tim Lomas, Nicola Beverley and Kay Howell.
e) if accepted to go through for assessment, we will notify the
school as soon as a decision is made. Schools should then organise
the assessment as soon as possible. It is essential that Hazel
Chesworth is informed of the outcome of the assessment which is
carried out independently by VTS. A delay would hold up the
acceptance of other colleagues onto the programme;
f) schools will then be funded for the AST rate following
confirmation of the outcome;
g) the LEA reserves the right to curtail the funding if there is
evidence of non-fulfilment of the AST role, particularly the
outreach work.
