This literature review is the first part of a project
investigating the role of the chair of school governing bodies. The
report reviews the literature on board chairs to inform all those
involved in school governing in England about the responsibility,
the role and the knowledge, capabilities and characteristics
required of the chair of the school governing body. The review
process entailed searching databases, journals, reports and texts
to identify all relevant sources.
In particular the review focuses on:
- The chair of the school governing body – what do we know?
- The board chair’s responsibilities
- The board chair’s role – what does the board chair do?
- The board chair – knowledge, capabilities and
characteristics
The second part of the project – a report based upon a survey
of, and interviews with, chairs of school governing bodies and
headteachers – will be published in early 2013.
