Higher education for secondary learning support staff
Certificate/Diploma in Professional Education Studies (with
HLTA status)

This is a self-contained one-year programme which is mapped against
the HLTA standards and can lead to HLTA assessment and/or on to
undergraduate degree studies for a further 2 years. The
diploma develops subject knowledge in a choice of English,
mathematics or science.
Students attend the university on a day-release basis through
out the first year.
Students who progress onto the degree programme attend
university for 2 days a week. Degree studies are in either BA
English Education Studies or BA Mathematics Education Studies. At
the end of the third year, students may register on the Graduate
Teacher Programme to gain Qualified Teacher Status whilst training
in their school.
The diploma attracts staff from a wide range of roles such as
those working with gifted and tallented students,
specialist staff working with students with ADHD and Aspergers
Syndrome, as well as pastoral heads of year and behaviour
management staff.
Course fees
£1,535 for Certificate/Diploma.
If undertaken as a route to HLTA assessment, the
Certificate/Diploma is fully funded and the school receives a
bursary of £1200 to support the student. See HLTA funding for

Fees for years 2 and 3 of degree courses : £3,000 each year.
Course fees vary from year to year.
Courses start in September.
