East Sussex Support Staff Standards and Self-Review

These support staff self-review booklets enable you to assess your practice against the East Sussex standards for support staff and support staff leaders. Use them to celebrate your strengths and identify areas for development.

The booklets directly support performance management processes and are set in the context of professional development for the school workforce. They form part of the set of self-review booklets developed with a range of other local and national standards for the whole school workforce.

East Sussex schools can purchase the support staff pack, together with accompanying CD Rom and guidance notes, from the School Improvement Service at a price of £25.00.

National Occupational Standards

National Occupational Standards (NOS) describe the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to undertake a particular task or job to a nationally recognised level of competence.  Visit the Standards website for more information.

Below are the standards we are most frequently asked for, but there are many more which are relevant to school staff.  Visit the UK Standards website  to search for standards relating to your area of interest.

• NOS for Teaching and Classroom Assistants ;
• NOS for Supporting Teaching and Learning in schools (STL): useful guidance on TDA website; 
• NOS for Learning, Development and Support Services  (NOS LDSS) provide minimum standards of practice for the work of Learning Mentors, Education Welfare Officers and practitioners supporting children and young people (such as Connexions Personal Advisers).
