The Primary Strategy

The role of the Primary Strategy Manager has been described nationally within "Excellence and Enjoyment" as the "one stop shop", a point of call for all enquiries regarding the primary strategy and for coordination of the primary strategy within an LA including management of consultants, consultant leaders and other strategy work in primary schools.

The Renewed Frameworks

The new frameworks mark the beginning of the Primary Strategies drive to further improve the quality of teaching and learning, helping teachers to understand the pedagogic principles they need to enhance and develop their own models of practice: moving from imitation to innovation.

The aims of the new framework are to:

  • support improved leadership and management of literacy and mathematics;
  • increasing drive and momentum, scaling up expectations;
  • provide integrated advice across the Foundation Stage and Key Stages 1 and 2;
  • promote longer term planning of teaching sequences that build learning over time;
  • create a clearer set of outcomes for learning progression to help raise the attainment of all pupils, personalise learning and secure intervention for those pupils who need it;
  • reduce workload, foster professional dialogue and provide easier access to teaching materials;
  • build in speaking and listening, cross curricular links and the use of ICT.

The main changes are that it provides:

  • an electronic version;
  • slimmed down objectives;
  • a clearer structure for literacy and mathematics;
  • more help with planning, teaching and assessment.

A differentiated offer for training and support for schools has been planned. Schools choose the input which best suits their needs as identified through the process of self-evaluation.
