Information
The MGP pilot consists of four elements:
- Assessment for progression: Teachers
in pilot schools will be able to enter pupils for short tests in
reading, writing and mathematics at a single national curriculum
level once a pupil is operating securely at the next level.
Teachers will be able to assess when a pupil is ready by rigorously
monitoring their progress throughout the year.
- Progression tutoring: One-to-one
tuition of up to 20 hours in English and/or maths will be provided
to pupils that are behind national expectations and who are still
making slow progress.
- Progression targets: Schools and
local authorities will be set targets to improve the number of
pupils making 2 levels of progress throughout the Key Stage.
- Progression premium: This is an
incentive payment made to those schools that help pupils who
entered the key stage behind expectations to make good
progress.
By trialling these four elements, the pilot will:
- help schools to motivate children to achieve more every day in
every class; teachers will be able to zero in on children who are
'coasting' or at risk of falling behind;
- test the impact of short bursts of one-to-one tuition in
English and maths;
- enable teachers to enter pupils for a test at the next National
Curriculum level when they think that they are ready;
- focus on the progress of children in the key transition years
from primary to secondary school, tracking them through Key Stages
2 and 3 (7 to 14 years old).
