Assessment for Learning
Assessment for Learning and testing for progress
The Making Good Progress pilot aims to explore how schools might
assess progress more systematically to support each pupils’ own
learning more effectively, and to improve progression rates overall
through:
- more use of formative assessment to influence a pupil’s own
learning journey;
- good assessment for learning practice and ‘next steps learning’
for pupils;
- teachers’ own assessment of their pupils’ progress and
attainment supported and strengthened by systematic tracking within
and between key stages, using pupil data and Assessing Pupil
Progress assessment criteria;
- single level tests which are short tests in reading, writing
and mathematics at a single national curriculum level and are
designed to validate progress in attainment already assessed by a
pupil’s teacher;
- engaging parents and pupils in setting and achieving of
learning goals and celebration of success achieved.
The pilot brings cohesiveness between assessment for learning
approaches, the use of Assessing Pupil Progress assessment criteria
and pupil data for tracking and identification of ‘next steps’
learning and the single-level tests that will foster a consistent
approach to learning and teaching in English and Mathematics and
across all years.
