Senior Level Leaders

Acting Headteachers - Guidance for Schools and Governors
An acting headteacher (AHT) is an experienced professional who takes on the duties of a substantive headteacher in their absence. The AHT will most commonly be:

  • the deputy headteacher of the school concerned;
  • a deputy headteacher from another school;
  • a headteacher from another school;
  • a senior teacher from the school concerned;
  • a consultant or school development adviser with headship experience, who may be deployed in extreme circumstances.

Acting headteachers are one of three key forms of additional leadership support offered by East Sussex School Improvement Service (SIS). Their work is in addition to that of consultants and contact advisers. The other two leadership support categories are: consultant headteachers, who provide additional leadership on behalf of the CSA in schools requiring additional support; and primary strategy consultant leaders, who are funded through standards fund to support the primary strategy leadership programme.
