Advanced Skills Teachers
As stated in the Annual Report of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector
for Schools (Feb 2003) LAs generally see ASTs as a strategic means
of extending the advisory service and supporting the development of
good practice across a wider range of schools. The key aim of this
strategy is to encourage and enable ASTs to disseminate and further
develop good practice in order to raise standards through improving
the quality of learning, teaching and leadership.
East Sussex recognises that ASTs, along with other expert
practitioners (such as leading teachers), are an important and
valuable resource to support school improvement, and that AST
status can assist with the recruitment and retention of good
teachers. We are therefore developing an effective partnership with
our schools to deploy ASTs as strategically as possible to the
benefit of schools, particularly those requiring additional
support, and the LA to support capacity building.
East Sussex is also currently engaged in a school improvement
project with Leading Professionals and targeted-subject ASTs, who
are able to support colleagues in the county to both raise
standards and share good practice. The Leading Professionals /
targeted-subject ASTs handbook is below.
