Definition and identification of G&T

Generally speaking, there is no fixed definition for the term gifted and talented, although high ability is usually categorised in six areas, namely: high intellectual ability; mechanical ingenuity; physical talent; visual and performing abilities; creativity; outstanding leadership and social awareness (DfEE 1995 +).

These areas continue to be recommended, both nationally and locally, to support school and LA definitions. The East Sussex School Improvement Service has produced, in consultation with schools, a booklet of identifiers to support the identification and planning process.

The School Improvement Service provides a range of support to schools to support G&T development. This includes:

• central training courses;
• on-site consultancy;
• leadership of and membership of the south-east region LAs’ G&T partnership, SEAGUL (South East Able and Gifted Unlimited);
• liaison with the Hastings and St Leonards Excellence Cluster G&T strand;
• annual DfES-funded summer schools; liaison with the DfES Gifted and Talented Education Unit and with the National Academy
