What is Creativity?
“Creativity is fundamental to successful learning. Being
creative enables children to make connections between one area of
learning and another and so extend their understanding”
(Curriculum Guidance 2000).
Children’s creativity develops most productively within a rich
learning environment supported by interventions of sensitive and
responsive adults.
To give all children the best opportunity for effective creative
development practitioners should give particular attention to:
- a stimulating environment in which creativity originality
and expressiveness are valued;
- a wide range of activities that children can respond to by
using many senses;
- opportunities for children to express their ideas through a
wide range of types of representation;
- opportunities to work alongside artists and other creative
adults.
As part of the ongoing work with practitioners in pre-schools
and reception classes CfBT East Sussex School Improvement Service
has run Cluster training sessions in order to support
children’s and practitioners developing creativity.
