The Early Years and Foundation Stage
The Early Years and Foundation Stage is a discrete stage within
the Primary Strategy.
The curriculum for the Early Years and Foundation Stage
underpins all future learning. With rigour and high expectation it
focuses on the uniqueness and development of the child’s social
skills and emotional confidence in an environment of discovery,
problem solving and creativity. The principles for effective
practice in the early years are in harmony with those at the heart
of the Primary Strategy.
It is therefore highly appropriate that a national focus is on
building the continuity and progression of learning. This
challenges our thinking and practice, our curriculum and pedagogy.
This is particularly true for children as they transfer from pre
school settings to the Reception class and for pupils as they move
from Reception into Year 1 and from the Foundation Stage
curriculum to Key Stage 1 curriculum.
