Introduction

Children/young people have special educational needs if they have:

Learning difficulties

  • Communication difficulties
  • Emotional or behavioural difficulties
  • Sensory or physical difficulties (2002 Code of Practice)

Fundamental Principles:

A child with SEN should have their needs met

  • The views of the child should be sought and taken into account.
  • Parents/carers have a vital role to play in supporting their child’s education

Purpose

  • To encourage children/young people with SEN to participate fully in include projects;
  • To work with statutory and voluntary bodies to provide support for children with SEN;
  • To present work in a variety of ways to help each child/young person;
  • To encourage children/young people to take part in decisions about their education/learning including setting learning targets and contributing to Individual Learning Plans, assessment of their needs, their annual review and transition planning.

Who should apply the Procedure and When?

  • Regional Managers to ensure that the procedure is in place in all include offices and monitored and up-dated annually;
